Hi, I'm Joy — a certified K-12 literacy specialist with 17 years of classroom experience and a passion for helping struggling readers find their footing.
I founded Reading and Writing With Joy because I kept seeing the same thing in classrooms: kids who were bright, capable, and completely written off because no one had taught them to read the right way. That's what we fix.
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education
I earned my B.A. in Elementary Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a concentration in English and a focus in literacy.
Areas of Certification:
NC Licensure in Elementary Education (K - 6th Grades)
NC Licensure in Middle Grades Language Arts (6th - 9th Grades)
NC Licensure in High School English (9th - 12th Grades)
Additional Training:
Trained in Barton Reading and Spelling System
Yale University training in understanding dyslexia and selecting evidence-based reading programs
My tutoring team is trained in UFLI Foundations, Orton-Gillingham, or both.
From my earliest memories, I was enamored with books. When I was 9, I finally found the best reading spot ever. Lying in a hammock, under a big oak tree, overlooking a pond, frogs croaking, crickets chirping, I floated into other worlds with every poem I absorbed by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is the magic I want to help students capture.
